Bus torched in West Ruimveldt - woman held
Police have detained a woman in connection with the torching of a West Ruimveldt businessman's mini-bus at around 04:00 hrs yesterday The bus, which belonged to businessman Ameer Ali, was destroyed when someone apparently set it alight after soaking the seats with petrol. The bus was parked in Alli's yard and part of his house was scorched. Only quick action by the West Ruimveldt fire brigade averted further disaster. Alli believes that a woman who had a recent dispute with his family was behind the attack. He said the vehicle is worth $700,000. According to reports, a neighbour heard the sound of breaking glass at around 04:00 hrs. On looking outside, he saw Alli's vehicle on fire. He raised an alarm and Alli and other residents immediately attempted to extinguish the flames with buckets of water. Firefighters from West Ruimveldt arrived a short while after and put the fire out. Khan said that the same neighbour who had raised the alarm claimed that he had awoken on Tuesday night and observed that the doors of the mini-bus were open. Alli believes that it was around that time that the arsonist was preparing to set the vehicle. The businessman owns a dog and believes that it did not bark because it knew the arsonist. According to Alli, the prime suspect is a woman who is well-known to the family. He alleged that the woman assaulted his mother on Monday and later threatened to torch his bus and burn his house down. He reported the matter to the police and the woman was arrested last night. According to Alli, he does not really want to have the woman prosecuted. “All I want is my bus back,” he said. Thursday 08-18-2005
